Blue Tree Tip of the Week

Do One Thing This Week That Scares You

This week’s tip is inspired by the above quote and my dear friend Scott. As the world is about to see, he is an amazing human, father, leader, and writer. His first book is coming out in December, and I’ve had the pleasure of reading an advance copy. So, with Halloween right around the corner, it struck me as a great week to highlight his great work and talk about how facing and overcoming our fears can serve as rocket fuel for our dreams and growth.

There is much written about the power of facing our fears. There is a plethora of anecdotal and statistical evidence that stepping out of our comfort zones is where our growth lies, personally and professionally. We all know this to be true, yes? But we can stay safe and small in the little self-created bubbles that give us the illusion of security. Or, we can try new things, be willing to suck at them and keep going anyway.

I know this to be true: the more I face my fears and push up against the edges of my comfort zones, the more my self-concept evolves. I want to think of myself as someone who is both curious and committed to my learning and growth. And I can only think of myself that way if I take actions that demonstrate this is true.

Fear bubbles up for me when I try new things physically (i.e., my embarrassingly poor attempt at pickleball this past month). And when I take certain steps to grow my business: going live on Facebook or posting a reel on Instagram. It may look seamless and easy, but it’s always an exercise of my courage muscle.

So, what is the one thing you’ll do this week to face fear? It doesn’t have to be big. It can be small, like making a call you’ve been putting off, sending a note to an old friend you’re thinking of, or buying a cup of coffee for a stranger.

Just reply to tell me how you’re leaping out of your nest! (The best response I get will be a Starbucks gift card for a pumpkin spice latte – or the fall beverage of your choice!)

Real Coaching Results

Several of my clients took delved their business numbers this week. Two powerhouse solopreneurs – excellent at what they do – are looking to make more revenue and impact.

Since it’s Q4, this is the perfect time to assess our revenue and expenses trends for the year. It’s a key to leveling up your business.

If this feels overwhelming to you, don’t do it alone. Instead, bring in a coach or a trusted advisor to help you unpack your numbers and make your ‘23 business plans.

P.S. This week on the podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with Carmen Turner, a global sustainability coach for women executives. Carmen went from a corporate career in sustainability to dipping her toes into a side gig and eventually into full-blown entrepreneurship. She has a lot to say about transitioning from corporate to working for yourself and taking control of your professional future. Check out the episode here and follow Carmen on Instagram @carmen.b.turner.
